Seascapes

The edge of land and water — tides, weather, and the quiet coves of Puget Sound and the far north.

Reading 2024

Vík, Iceland

Print

During a day touring Iceland’s south coast, a woman reading alone on the basalt columns at Vík’s black sand beach offered a striking contrast. The scene needed no color adjustments at all.

Bank 2026

Misty Fjords National Monument, near Ketchikan, Alaska

Print

Breaks in a late-summer cloud bank revealed dark lakes and forested ridges thousands of feet below. The shifting weather opened fleeting views of this vast coastal wilderness before the mist reclaimed them.

Hubbard 2026

Hubbard Glacier, Disenchantment Bay, Alaska

Print

Nearly as tall as a forty-story building, Hubbard Glacier’s fractured blue wall is difficult to convey at any scale. Beyond it rise mountains and snowfields as the glacier thunders toward Disenchantment Bay and the Gulf of Alaska.

Deception 2026

Deception Pass, Whidbey Island, Washington

Print

Flying an aerial camera in from several miles away, Chris turned it down over Deception Pass. The 1935 bridge appeared almost two hundred feet above the water on a silvery spring afternoon.

Town Beach 1986

Southold, Long Island, New York

Print

The largest beach on Long Island Sound in Southold, on the North Fork. Chris lifeguarded here and at other local beaches while growing up.

Coupeville 2023

Penn Cove, Coupeville, Washington

Print

An October long weekend in Coupeville is a family tradition. On this blustery early morning, the sky above the iconic Coupeville Wharf was especially moody.

Labor Day 2002

Orient Point, New York

Print

Summer’s end, photographed through a windshield during a fierce Atlantic downpour. Chris was at the Orient Point ferry dock, heading back to Massachusetts on Labor Day.

Ebey 2024

Ebey’s Landing, Whidbey Island, Washington

Print

Discovered on Chris’s first visit to Whidbey Island, Ebey’s Landing remains a favorite place to observe the Salish Sea from beach or bluff. This autumn day was magnificent, windy, and warmer than it looks.
